2017 included many exciting moments for us here at eero. We shipped our second generation product and first premium subscription service, expanded retail distribution, and learned some interesting tidbits along the way. We thought we’d share a few of our favorites.
The second generation eero
In 2016, eero was the first company to introduce a Home WiFi system on the foundation of our TrueMesh technology. In 2017, we built upon that success to introduce a second generation system, which is even faster and more customizable than before.
The second generation of eero offers customers an experience built on everything we learned in the past, plus a WiFi system powerful enough to ensure they can access the internet no matter the size and shape of their home. The new eero Beacon — a full-fledged access point that’s half the size of eero and more powerful than most routers on the market — delivers the same experience in a newly compact and elegant package.
OTA updates put to the test
One of the biggest and most unfortunate trends in technology has been the growth in cyber-security threats. eero, designed with security in mind, has been at the forefront of keeping people safe.
In October, cyber security researchers disclosed a major vulnerability named KRACK in the WPA2 security protocol, which encrypts all traffic between WiFi access points and client devices like your iPhone or computer. Thanks to our rigorous software testing and nimble update deployment infrastructure, we were able to release a software patch to automatically update 100% of eero networks in less than a week — months before many others even released a software fix.
We also launched eero Plus, an all-new premium subscription service focused on making security and content filtering easier than ever. When enabled, eero Plus offers our customers an extra layer of digital protection, with advanced network security, enhanced parental controls, password management, VPN, ad blocking, malware services, and a weekly activity report. Like the software on eero devices, this service is just going to get better and better over time.
